RATtle and Roll
After talking to a couple of people on the R3vLimited boards and with another E30 guy, I figured out that the little bolt that is all stripped below really isn’t necessary for the safe operation of the car. It is just there to hold the brake disk in place while you put the wheel on. If you use studs like I do, then it is no big deal to mount the wheel without the bolt.
I put the right rear back together, torqued it down, and took it out for a drive. It was just a quick lap around the block. I stopped and retourqued the wheels. Then I went off on a longer drive. It went fine and the car seemed to be working properly.
I shot a little bit of video of the third test drive. I took it up to speed and checked things out.
I did one hard braking test. The ABS is currently not working. I am not sure what is wrong. Both of the speed sensors are clean and the wiring looked OK. But, it is something I will have to diagnose later on. During my brake test I think I locked up a wheel because the car pulled a bit until I let up a bit on the brakes. I am using Hawk pads, but they are not full race pads. They seem to work quite well though. The car does want to stop.
The sound in the video is not very good. I tried to clean it up a bit to get rid of some of the static. It helps a bit. I think it was just too loud in the car and it overloaded the microphone on the camera. I should have rolled up the windows, that would have helped some when I got up to speed. But, it is what it is now. The video is also a bit shaky. I am not sure if that is because of the stiff suspension or the fact that I had to use a mount that requires posts for the headrest and my seats have none.
